I was up at 4:15 AM on purpose yesterday. Coffee made, husband talked to, every piece of my normal routine done — and I still ran out the door late.
It wasn't a time management problem. I had the time. What I didn't have was a plan for what happens in my own brain when an idea worth chasing shows up at 4:15 in the morning.
That's not a discipline problem — that's time blindness, and if you have ADHD or you're parenting a kid who does, it's probably more familiar than you'd like.
Here's the piece that changes everything about how we build routines this year: a routine that starts with fixing your kid's behavior is starting in the wrong place. It has to start with you — whether you can stay regulated enough, in the middle of a rough morning, to build something your family can actually lean on.
Where do YOU need to start first, before you build anything for your kid? What's the thing — your own Wall of Awful, your own time blindness, your own rough mornings — that gets in the way before your child even walks into the room?
Drop it in the comments. No fixing it required today — just naming it out loud is the first move.
This post is part of the discussion that goes with our Routines Starter mini-course — a short, self-paced course built around these three videos, with the full workbook and reflection tools behind them. If you want to go deeper, you can check it out here: https://academy.learninginadistractedworld.com/courses/routines-starter-kit
If it's not the right fit for you right now, that's completely fine — the video itself is free to watch, and you're welcome to join the discussion either way. I've dropped the link in the first comment below.

I'll go first on the question: mine is my bedroom, bathroom, and closet. I know exactly what I want it to look like — I just haven't made it happen yet. And every single summer, I do a version of this in my classroom too. Your turn — what's yours? 👇
